3 τεμάχια παραδοσιακών κούκλων Κοκεσί - Ξύλο - Ιαπωνία - Shōwa period (1926-1989)
This set consists of three traditional Japanese kokeshi dolls, beautifully handcrafted from wood and painted in the characteristic style of traditional Japanese folk art. Kokeshi dolls originated in the Tohoku region of northern Japan and have been cherished for generations as both decorative objects and symbols of good fortune and craftsmanship.
Each doll in this set features a distinctive design and hand-painted decoration. The tallest doll is particularly striking, with a large expressive head and a detailed painted landscape scene on the body depicting autumn foliage and a bridge over a valley. Above the landscape, flowing Japanese calligraphy adds a poetic atmosphere, reflecting the traditional aesthetic often seen in kokeshi from the region. The vivid colors of red, yellow, green, and black contrast beautifully with the natural grain of the wood.
The two smaller dolls complement the central piece with simpler yet elegant designs. One features traditional red floral patterns and symmetrical decorative motifs, while the other displays soft floral painting and delicate horizontal stripes typical of classic kokeshi decoration. Their calm facial expressions and minimalist features embody the quiet charm that makes kokeshi dolls so beloved among collectors.
All three dolls are turned from solid wood and hand-painted, showing subtle variations and brushwork typical of handcrafted folk art. The bases bear handwritten inscriptions and stamps indicating the workshop or craftsman. One signature reads “山栄作” (Yamaei saku – made by Yamaei), suggesting the work of a traditional kokeshi artisan.
These dolls were likely produced during the late Showa period (昭和後期, around 1970–1980s), when traditional kokeshi continued to be made both for collectors and as regional cultural souvenirs.
Today, kokeshi dolls are appreciated worldwide as iconic examples of Japanese folk craftsmanship. This set offers a charming display combining different sizes and decorative styles, making it appealing for collectors of Japanese folk art, vintage handicrafts, and traditional wooden dolls.
Artist / Maker Profile
The exact workshops of all three dolls are not fully identified, but the inscription “山栄作” (Yamaei) indicates a craftsman associated with traditional kokeshi production. Traditional kokeshi are made by artisans in the Tohoku region, particularly in areas such as Miyagi, Fukushima, and Yamagata. Craftsmen typically carve the dolls from local woods such as mizuki or cherry and decorate them using simple yet expressive brush painting. Each workshop develops its own distinctive facial expressions, body proportions, and decorative motifs, making every piece slightly unique.
