This vase by Masanao Kikuchi, titled “Hyotan” (Gourd), beautifully reflects the elegant form and symbolism of the traditional gourd motif.
Its long, slender neck and softly swelling body create a graceful silhouette reminiscent of a gourd, expressing a sense of refined simplicity deeply rooted in Japanese aesthetics. In Japan, the gourd has long been regarded as an auspicious symbol associated with good fortune, protection from illness, and prosperity, and this work carries that quiet celebratory spirit.
The deep dark-brown to nearly black surface reveals subtle tonal variations depending on the light, giving the piece a restrained yet powerful presence. It is beautiful both as a flower vase and as a sculptural object on its own. Accompanied by its original wooden box, it is an appealing work for both display and collection.
Masanao Kikuchi is a Japanese kama-shi, a craftsman specializing in kettles for the tea ceremony. Born in Yamagata in 1959, he is introduced as the 15th head of the Kikuchi family, a lineage said to descend from official foundry craftsmen who served the Yamagata domain under Lord Mogami Yoshiaki. He is especially known for producing wazuku-gama, iron kettles made primarily from satetsu (iron sand), and for his study of historical kettle-making techniques. The Japan Traditional Culture Foundation notes that he received the Japan Traditional Culture Encouragement Award in 1994 and is affiliated with the Japan Kogei Association.
