A captivating tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 featuring a Tosa School 土佐派 genre painting vividly portraying daily life in the Edo period, showing both commoners and aristocrats across various settings.
The scenes present people from all walks of life. In the upper left, figures wrapped in winter clothing pass by a shop in a snowy street. To the right, a small gathering enjoys drinks, music, and dance during an outdoor picnic. In the centre, temple complexes bustle with visitors walking through the torii gates, while tall shrine banners proudly display the ranks and titles of the deities they honour, such as “The Great Deity Inari” 稻荷大明神. Along the right side, travellers move by boat and horseback. And many more scenes are portrayed.
These scenes are encased within shimmering gold leaf clouds, adorned with oval circles in relief along their rims. The artwork is rendered in ink and colour on gold leaf and mulberry paper, bordered by two brocade silk trims: a slender navy blue inner border and a broader green outer border. Encased in a black lacquered wooden frame fitted with protective metal hardware featuring scrolling foliage motifs.
Period: Japan – 19th century (Late Edo period/Early Meiji period).
Dimensions:
Total width: 367.6 cm (2 x 62.6 cm, 4 x 60.6 cm); Height: 173.2 cm.
Considering its age, the screen is in a very good condition with some traces of wear consistent with age and restorations on both sides, including discolouration, small hole third panel, and some repapering of the reverse. Please refer to the photos for a clear impression of its condition.
The folding screen is ideal for mounting flat on a wall and presenting as a single work of art.
When shipped we will add a certificate of authenticity.
