Item Description This elegant lacquerware document box (fubako) is a fine example of Aizu-nuri (会津塗), one of Japan's most celebrated lacquerware traditions, produced under the brand Aizunusato. The box features a lustrous jet-black lacquer ground (kuro-urushi) adorned with delicate gold-painted decoration (kin-sai) depicting the sasanqua (Camellia sasanqua) motif — a classic winter-blooming flower associated with elegance and quiet refinement. The lid showcases a swirling cloud-dragon (unryū) design rendered with the characteristic finesse of Aizu craftsmanship. Constructed from natural wood (tennen-ki), this flat rectangular box — known as a fubako or letter/postcard box — is sized to accommodate postcards (hagaki) and small correspondence. The deep, mirror-like lacquer finish and the graceful gold floral accents reflect over 400 years of lacquerware heritage from the Aizu region of Fukushima Prefecture. Aizu-nuri has been designated a traditional craft (dentō kōgeihin) by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan since 1975.
