Shino Ware Κυλινδρικό βάζο λουλουδιών - Κεραμικό - 加藤孝造 Kato Kozo(1935–2023) - Ιαπωνία - 1900–2000

Item Description: 加藤孝造 Kato Kozo(1935–2023)— Shino Ware Cylindrical Flower Vase (志野筒花入 Shino Tsutsuhanaike) A rare and important cylindrical flower vase (tsutsuhanaike, 筒花入) in classic Shino ware, crafted by Kato Kozo — one of the most celebrated masters of Mino ceramics and a designated Living National Treasure (Ningen Kokuhō, 人間国宝) of Japan. The vessel presents a refined, upright cylindrical form typical of the traditional tsutsuhanaike style favoured in the tea ceremony. The surface is enveloped in Kato's signature Shino glaze — a layered feldspar white punctuated by warm peach and blush tones, with subtle fire-marks, crawling, and natural iron brushwork revealing the transformative dialogue between clay and flame. The soft, luminous quality of the glaze reflects the poetic spirit of Momoyama-era ceramics that Kato devoted his life to reviving. Wood-fired in Kato's anagama (穴窯) kiln following ancient Momoyama-period methods, this piece carries the natural irregularities and depth of character that distinguish authentic, hand-crafted Shino ware from any machine-made imitation. The work comes with its original signed wooden presentation box (tomobako, 共箱), protective cloth (tomobuno, 共布), and an informational bookmark (shiori, 栞), confirming its authenticity. A significant collector's piece by a master whose works are held in the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, and museums worldwide. Size Height: 21.5 cm Width: 10.5 cm Depth: 10.5 cm Condition The vase shows minor surface wear consistent with age and use; overall in good used condition with no notable damage. Artist Profile 加藤孝造 Kato Kozo (1935–2023) was born in Mizunami, Gifu Prefecture, and is regarded as one of the supreme masters of Mino ceramics. After studying under Kato Kobei V at the Gifu Prefectural Ceramics Testing Center, he came under the profound influence of Living National Treasure Arakawa Toyozo, which set him on a lifelong path to reviving the Momoyama ceramic tradition. He established his anagama kiln in Tajimi, where he dedicated himself to the classical Mino techniques of Shino, Setoguro (Black Seto), and Kiseto. In 1995 he was designated an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Gifu Prefecture for Shino and Setoguro, and in 2010 he was designated a Living National Treasure (Ningen Kokuhō) by the Japanese government for Setoguro. His works are held in the collections of the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, the Gifu Prefectural Museum of Fine Arts, and numerous international institutions.
