Tōkyō (東京) - Shikō Munakata (棟方志功,1903-1975) - Ιαπωνία (χωρίς τιμή ασφαλείας)

Artwork Title: Tōkyō (東京) Artist: Shikō Munakata (棟方志功,1903–1975) Technique: Woodcut Print Signature & Seal: Hand-signed in pencil and sealed by the artist on the print Edition Number: 3/10 (Limited Edition, 限量版) Paper Size: 34 × 31 cm (13.39 × 12.20 in) Backing Size: 39 × 36.2 cm (15.35 × 14.25 in) Paper Material: Washi Publisher: Yaskawa Denki Seisakusho Co., Ltd. (株式会社 安川電機製作所) This vibrant and dynamic work, Tōkyō (東京), is a color woodcut print by renowned Japanese printmaker Shikō Munakata, originally created in the 1960s. It stands as a representative piece from his later period, where he explored color and urban themes. This is a later edition, reproduced and officially released by Yaskawa Denki Seisakusho Co., Ltd. (株式会社 安川電機製作所) in January 1992. In the lower-left corner, two female figures are rendered with concise, vivid lines and bold colors, capturing the everyday life of a city street. The background is constructed from intersecting black lines and geometric color blocks; the striking contrast between purple and yellow creates a strong sense of spatial depth, evoking both the architectural outlines of a modern metropolis and an abstract visual tension that reflects the vitality and anxiety of post-war Japanese society. Through fragmented forms, vibrant colors, and dynamic carved lines, the work masterfully captures the energy and chaos of modern urban life, marking an important shift in Munakata’s artistic practice from early Zen-inspired themes to depictions of city living. The title Tōkyō (東京) is inscribed in the upper-right corner of the print. The artist’s pencil signature appears at the bottom, with a red artist’s seal and the limited-edition number 3/10 in the lower-right corner. Text on the reverse of the washi paper and the backing sheet reads: 1992 東海道棟方板画 (Tōkaidō Munakata Hanga) 1992年1月 東京 (January 1992, Tōkyō) 橋央里元標の柵 (Hashōsato Motohyō no Saku) 株式会社 安川電機製作所 (Yaskawa Denki Seisakusho Co., Ltd.) Due to age, the washi paper shows minor oxidation, toning and creasing; the work is in good condition. This work is sold unframed; the images are for display purposes only to show the effect after framing. Shikō Munakata was originally named Kumao Munakata. He enrolled in the Western Painting Department of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts but later dropped out due to financial constraints. In 1927, he dedicated himself fully to printmaking. Influenced initially by traditional Japanese ukiyo-e (浮世絵) and Western Expressionism, he developed a distinctive style characterized by dramatic black-and-white contrasts and bold, concise lines, with subject matter encompassing folk tales and mythology. His career gained momentum in 1936 when his works were selected for the First Independent Art Association Exhibition. In 1955, he was designated a Living National Treasure by the Japanese government—a prestigious official title for bearers of Japan’s intangible cultural heritage. His artworks have been exhibited extensively both domestically and internationally, playing a pivotal role in introducing Japanese printmaking to the global stage. His artistic legacy continues to inspire countless printmakers to this day.
