Jacques de Molay was the 23rd and last Grand Master of the Knights Templar, an influential military and religious order founded during the Crusades. He led the order from about 1298 until its suppression in 1312. King Philip IV of France, who was deeply in debt to the Templars, arrested Molay and other knights in 1307 on false charges. After years of imprisonment and torture, Molay retracted a forced confession and was burned at the stake in Paris in March 1314.
