A Hagi ware matcha tea bowl formed with a robust body and finished in a thick, milky-white glaze applied over a coarse, iron-rich clay. This example belongs to the so-called Oni-Hagi style, in which sand-rich clay and a heavy glaze application produce a rugged surface through crawling, pooling, and areas of intentional exposure. The bowl is supported by a pronounced wari-kōdai (split foot), deliberately divided into four sections, giving the base a strong structural presence. On the exterior, vertical glaze runs and irregular breaks reveal the dark clay beneath, creating a varied surface as the glaze thins and gathers during firing. A circular artist’s seal is impressed into the clay near the base.
Notably large in scale for a tea bowl, this work measures 16.4 cm in diameter and 11.0 cm in height, giving it a commanding physical presence. The generous proportions emphasize the sculptural qualities of the Oni-Hagi style, with the weight and volume of the form enhancing the dynamic interaction between the thick glaze and the coarse clay body. When held, the bowl conveys a sense of mass and stability rather than delicacy, underscoring its character as a powerful and expressive chawan.
The piece is accompanied by its original wooden storage box (tomobako), a fabric wrapping (tomobukuro), and a descriptive leaflet (shiori).
