Ρεγκένσια του Αλγερίου (Αλγερία). Mahmud II. 1/8 Budju H 1244 (AD 1829) (χωρίς τιμή ασφαλείας)
Regency of Algiers - ⅛ Budju 1829, Sultan Mahmud II.
A fascinating historic silver coin from the Regency of Algiers, the Ottoman-era state that ruled present-day Algeria before the French conquest. Coins from the Regency of Algiers are notably difficult to find, making them especially desirable for collectors of Islamic and North African numismatics.
This issue was struck during the reign of Sultan Mahmud II (1808–1830) and belongs to the Budju monetary system used in Algeria between the 17th and 19th centuries. The coin features elegant Arabic calligraphy naming the sultan, surrounded by a classic dotted border typical of the region’s minting style.
Struck in silver, the coin weighs about 1.3 g with a diameter around 17 mm, and was produced on the characteristic irregular flan seen on many hand-struck Ottoman provincial issues.
The piece displays clear calligraphy and attractive historic character, highlighting the bold central inscriptions and traditional North African minting style.
A scarce and historically rich silver coin, representing the little-seen coinage of the Regency of Algiers, an excellent opportunity for collectors of Islamic, Ottoman, and early North African coinage to acquire a type that is seldom encountered on the market.
