This lot features a captivating collection of four (4) antique Japanese portable beam scales, known as "Daitoku-hakari" or "Senza-hakari." Traditionally used from the Edo period through the Taisho era, these precise instruments were essential for merchants and officials to weigh koban (gold coins), silver, and other precious metals.
Detailed Breakdown (4 Items Total):
Set 1 (Complete): One (1) fully complete set including the dark wooden case, the articulated metal beam (scale), the weighing pan with strings, and the bronze/iron weight.
Set 2 (Case & Scale): One (1) wooden case containing the metal beam and pan, but missing the separate weight.
Set 3 & 4 (Empty Cases): Two (2) beautiful antique wooden empty cases.
Key Features for Collectors:
Official Verification Marks: The metal weighing pans are densely stamped with numerous "Ken-in" (official verification marks or hallmarks). Each mark represents an inspection by authorities over the years, proving its long, active use in trade.
Historical Inscriptions: The reverse side of the wooden cases bears fascinating ink inscriptions (Sumigaki) detailing a history of owners and verifications. Clear dates from the Tenpo era (1830s-1840s), Meiji period, and Taisho era are visible, providing rare genealogical provenance for these tools.
Material: The beams and pans appear to be made of brass (non-magnetic), and the weight is a heavy iron/bronze alloy. The cases are hand-carved wood with early metal hinges.
Dimensions:
Largest Case Size: approx. 27 cm (L) x 10 cm (W) x 2 cm (H)
Condition Report:
This is a genuine antique lot showing significant signs of age and historical wear. The metal parts have a deep, natural patina and oxidation. The weighing pans are dented and heavily marked from use. The wooden cases have scratches, chips, and smooth wear. Two sets are incomplete. We have intentionally left them in their unrestored condition to preserve their historical authenticity and "Wabi-Sabi" aesthetic. Please refer to the high-resolution photos for the exact condition. Sold as a historical study collection.
A rare opportunity to acquire a time-capsule collection documenting a century of Japanese monetary history.
