Traditional Dilruba Bowed String Instrument with Sympathetic Strings and Bow – India, 1960s (Purchased in Pune, 1965)
A traditional Indian Dilruba, a bowed string instrument closely related to the esraj, featuring a long fretted neck and numerous sympathetic strings, as clearly visible in the photographs.
The instrument combines elements of plucked and bowed string traditions, with metal frets along the neck and a set of resonance strings that enhance its rich tonal character. The construction and form are consistent with classical North Indian musical instruments.
According to the previous auction house, the instrument dates to the 1960s and was reportedly purchased in Pune (India) in 1965, adding an interesting element of provenance.
The body features a wooden structure with a skin-covered soundboard, a traditional characteristic that contributes to its distinctive tonal qualities. The instrument is accompanied by its original bow.
