Αρχαία Αίγυπτος, τελευταία εποχή λινό ύφασμα πλαισιωμένες λωρίδες γάζας μούμιας για Harpakhem, 66,3 εκ. x 4,3 εκ. -Ex-Christies -

This linen covering is part of a set of nine bandages from the same mummy, which, thanks to the inscriptions on the bandages, can be identified as Harpakhem. The bandages are made from a single sheet of pure linen, which gives them a robust but flexible texture. The inscriptions are in black ink, which is well preserved as the scribe did not change brushes at any point, so the bandages were not affected by the corrosive effect of the thick ink. However, the factory has some conservation problems due to the oils and resins used by the embalmers, which have caused small lumps and stains to appear on the bandages. The inscription is a confusing and abridged version of Chapter 160. This chapter records a spell recited by the deceased over an amulet in the shape of a papyrus stalk placed around his neck, with which he may or may not have identified. Furthermore, it makes direct references to the name of the deceased, Harpakhem, and that of his mother, Taamun, as well as to the city of Heliopolis. The spell in Chapter 160 reads as follows: “Here is a Uadj talisman carved from an emerald. It protects against all attacks of Evil. Thoth bestows it upon those who worship him, who keep at bay all that displeases the gods. I prosper if the talisman prospers; if it is not attained, neither am I; if it is unusable, so shall I be. Here speaks Thoth. His words give protection to my spine.” “Behold, you arrive in peace, O Lord of Heliopolis and Pe! Shu makes his way towards you; he finds you in Shenmu; Nshem is your Name. You dwell in the stronghold of the mighty god… Truly, your limbs shall suffer no harm, for they are protected by Tum himself…” Provenance: Antiquities, Christie’s.
