Dial and Hands
The dial is a masterclass in 1970s design, featuring a captivating horizontal gradient that transitions between deep navy and vibrant metallic blue depending on the light. The typography is crisp and perfectly preserved, with a sans-serif printed "AUTOMATIC" and "23 JEWELS" complementing the sharply applied, faceted "SEIKO" and "LM" logos. The applied rectangular hour markers feature a mirror-polished finish with white central channels, harmonizing flawlessly with the polished baton hands that also carry white center striping. A prominent day-date aperture at three o'clock is framed by a stepped metallic border. Close inspection reveals an exceptionally well-preserved surface, free of spotting, moisture damage, edge wear, or discoloration, retaining its factory-fresh brilliance.
Case and Crystal
The 36 mm stainless steel case features a classic cushion silhouette with beautifully integrated lugs. The architecture of the case is well-preserved, showcasing a distinct transition between the circularly brushed upper surfaces and the brightly polished flanks. The lug profiles remain sharp and exhibit honest, age-consistent handling marks without showing signs of heavy over-polishing. The watch is fitted with a dramatic faceted crystal, a hallmark of premium Seiko models of this era. The angular cuts of the crystal interact brilliantly with the dial beneath, presenting minor surface wear consistent with careful vintage use but remaining structurally excellent and visually striking.
Movement
Powering this timepiece is the Seiko Caliber 5606A, a 23-jewel automatic movement renowned for its reliability and sophisticated design. The movement presents cleanly, with the rotor clearly stamped with the caliber designation and jewel count. The visual inspection reveals tidy bridges and a healthy balance assembly. Performing well within expected vintage tolerances; running strong and steady. The timegrapher results indicate an accuracy of -25 to -30 seconds per day.
Strap
The watch is fitted with its original stainless steel multi-link bracelet. The folding clasp is proudly stamped with the raised "SEIKO LM" signature, confirming its originality to the model line. The endlinks are correctly stamped with the code "XNA". The bracelet exhibits normal vintage stretch and light surface scuffs consistent with careful wear, accommodating a wrist size of up to 18 cm.
Condition
This timepiece survives in excellent vintage condition. The dial is exceptionally clean and stands as the undeniable highlight of the watch. The case retains its original geometry and finishing contrasts, showing only honest, superficial signs of wear. The original signed bracelet and intact faceted crystal further elevate the collectibility and preservation level of this striking vintage Seiko.
Dimensions
The case measures 36 mm in diameter, excluding the crown. The included original bracelet will accommodate a wrist size of up to 18 cm.
Remarks
Finding a faceted-crystal Lord Matic with a dial in such immaculate condition is an increasingly rare occurrence. The interplay between the geometric glass and the horizontally banded blue dial creates a dynamic visual experience on the wrist. This is a highly charismatic vintage piece that offers tremendous presence and mechanical pedigree.
History
Introduced in the late 1960s, the Lord Matic line was positioned as a premium offering, sitting just below the elite King Seiko and Grand Seiko tiers. The LM series was instrumental in establishing Seiko's dominance in the automatic watch market, utilizing the advanced 5600-series movements that would eventually be adapted for chronometer-grade models. The 1970s saw the Lord Matic line embrace bold, futuristic designs, incorporating vibrant colors, textured dials, and elaborately faceted crystals that perfectly captured the spirit of the decade.
