3 τεμάχια παραδοσιακών κούκλων Κοκεσί - Ξύλο - Ιαπωνία - Shōwa period (1926-1989)

This lot consists of three traditional Japanese Kokeshi dolls, handcrafted wooden folk art figures originating from the Tōhoku region in northern Japan. Kokeshi dolls are one of the most iconic forms of Japanese folk craft and are highly appreciated by collectors of vintage Japanese decorative art and mingei (folk craft). Each doll is carefully turned from wood on a lathe and finished with hand-painted decorations. Their elegant cylindrical bodies and expressive faces represent the refined simplicity and warmth that characterize traditional Japanese craftsmanship. The two larger dolls display striking traditional decorations in red, black, and natural wood tones. One features a repeating stylized leaf or feather motif arranged vertically along the body, while the other presents elegant horizontal banding combined with a floral design painted at the center of the body. The bold red coloring and rhythmic patterns are typical decorative elements found in classic Kokeshi production. The smaller doll contrasts beautifully with the larger pieces, featuring a vivid red and black striped body with a charming decorative motif resembling hanging ornaments or festival decorations. Its expressive face and slightly different proportions add visual balance to the set. All three dolls feature delicately hand-painted facial expressions with subtle differences in eye shape and hairstyle, demonstrating the individuality of handmade folk art. The bases of the dolls show handwritten inscriptions and marks, indicating the work of individual craftsmen. Based on their style and craftsmanship, these dolls were likely produced during the Shōwa period (1926–1989), most probably in the mid-Shōwa era (1950s–1970s) when Kokeshi collecting became widely popular across Japan. During this time many artisans created distinctive variations that are now appreciated worldwide by collectors. Today vintage Kokeshi dolls are valued not only as traditional toys but also as examples of Japanese minimalist design and folk art. This attractive trio offers a wonderful combination of size variation, decorative diversity, and authentic vintage character, making it a charming addition to any collection of Japanese antiques or decorative objects. The items show minor wear consistent with age, which enhances their authentic vintage appeal. Please refer to the photographs for condition details. Please note that the Coca-Cola can shown in the photographs is for size reference only and is not included in the lot. Artist / Craftsman Profile Traditional Kokeshi dolls originated during the Edo period (1603–1868) in the hot spring towns of the Tōhoku region of northern Japan. They were created by craftsmen known as kiji-shi, woodworkers who specialized in turning wooden objects such as bowls and trays using a lathe. Using leftover wood from their work, these artisans began crafting simple dolls for children visiting the hot springs. Over time these toys developed into a distinctive folk art form, with different regions establishing recognizable styles characterized by unique head shapes, facial expressions, and painted motifs. During the Shōwa period (1926–1989) Kokeshi production expanded significantly and the dolls became popular as souvenirs and collectible folk art. Today they are internationally admired as representative works of Japanese mingei (folk craft) and traditional handmade artistry.
