A fine gold-lacquer kôgô 香合 (incense box) attributed to Nishimura Hikobei VI 六代 西村彦兵衛 (active 1884–1906), in the form of a chrysanthemum. The box and its flush-fitting lid 印籠蓋 (inrôbuta) are elegantly modelled as a chrysanthemum blossom, rendered in rich gold lacquer. The centre is formed by a gilt metal pistil set above a dark lacquered leaf and stem. The interior is finished in a sparse nashiji 梨子地 on a black ground. Complete with the original signed and sealed tomobako 共箱 (storage box): ‘Heian Zôhiko’ 平安象彦, a signature used by Nishimura Hikobei VI of the renowned Kyoto lacquer workshop. The Zôhiko company, founded in 1661 in Kyoto, is among Japan’s oldest and most esteemed lacquer ateliers, known for combining classical design with refined craftsmanship. Period: Japan – Taishô period (1912-1926) Dimensions: Diameter 7 cm, Height 2.8 cm. In very good condition, with minor wear consistent with age, including light rubbing to the lacquer and minute losses. Overall presenting very well.
