1. Title: Beauty with Autumn Maple Leaves (紅葉美人)
Artist: Anonymous (Japanese Shin-hanga (新浮世絵) Bijin-ga (美人絵) artist, Taisho–Showa period)
Original Date: Early 20th century (Taisho period, c.1910–1930s)
Sheet size: 32.5 × 23.2 cm (12.8 × 9.1 in)
Image size: 30.5 × 22.5 cm (12.0 × 8.9 in)
Mount size: 48.5 × 33.5 cm (19.1 × 13.2 in)
A classic example of Taisho-period Shin-hanga bijin-ga, themed around autumn maple leaves. It depicts an elegant modern woman with a high Taisho-style coiffure adorned with a yellow ribbon, wearing a deep purple outer robe and grey-green patterned kimono. She rests her hand gently near her lips, expressing quiet contemplation. Delicate lines render the folds and texture of the kimono with harmonious colours. Falling red maple leaves define the autumn season and lend poetic movement, creating a serene, elegant Oriental atmosphere that embodies traditional Japanese aesthetics of feminine grace, subtlety, and harmony between nature and humanity.
2. Title: Beauty by the Lantern(灯下美人)
Artist: Kaburagi Kiyokata (鏑木清方,1878–1972)
Original Date: Early 20th century (Taisho–Showa period, c.1920–1940s)
Sheet size: 33.5 × 23.5 cm (13.2 × 9.3 in)
Image size: 31.5 × 22 cm (12.4 × 8.7 in)
Mount size: 48.5 × 33.5 cm (19.1 × 13.2 in)
A masterpiece by Kaburagi Kiyokata, a leading master of the Shin-hanga (新浮世絵) movement and recipient of the Order of Culture. The print shows a graceful woman in a pale pink striped kimono, with a high Taisho-style coiffure and golden hairpin, resting her cheek in her hand in gentle contemplation. A stone lantern, garden greenery, and bamboo screen create a tranquil, refined interior setting, capturing subtle feminine emotion and elegant charm. With refined, flowing lines and soft, elegant colours, Kiyokata fused traditional Ukiyo-e elegance with modern sensibility, portraying the feminine ideal of the Taisho era and expressing modern Japanese secular aesthetics and humanism.
The prints show slight natural age-related toning due to time; overall in good condition.
