“Henry Lansdell was a 19th century British priest in the Church of England. He was also a noted explorer and author. He was the author of a number of books including Chinese Central Asia: A Ride to Little Tibet, which ran to five editions in English and was also translated into German, Danish, and Swedish”. This work is an account of a journey of some 3000 miles by land and 5000 by water through southern Siberia, with observations on prisons and mines, and on the indigenous peoples. The author departed from London to St. Petersburg, from where he began a journey through Siberia, largely with the intention of visiting prisons and penal institutions. He travelled from Tobolsk eastwards via Tomsk, Irkutsk, to the Amur and ending at Vladivostock. Lansdell offers descriptions of the towns and regions, as well as of Kamchatka and the island of Sakhalin, making reference to present and past explorers. The book is beautifully illustrated with 18 illustrations, including frontispiece plate, full-page wood-engraved plates, printed on thick papers, drawings in text, and large folding map showing authors’ route in red ink. Published by Sampson Low, Marston, Searle, and Rivington, London, 1882. Publisher’s original grey boards lettered in gilt to spine, front covers with title in silver, and illustrations in gilt, silver and black. Book Dimensions: 22 x 15 x 3 cm and Number of Pages: 404 including 3 Appendix & Index Condition External covers are faded and marked, and light wear at corners and minor rubbings to head and foot of the spine. Internally; in good condition. A bookplate of Robert Gurney Hoare on inside front cover page. Pages are clean, with age foxing marks to the first and last blank front free endpaper pages. The folded map is complete and illustrations in nice condition (Please see pictures).
