Item Description:
谷口正典 Taniguchi Masanori
This elegant ceramic flower vase is a work by Taniguchi Masanori, the second-generation head of a distinguished Kyoto ceramic lineage working in the tradition of Kyoyaki (京焼, Kyoto ware).
The piece showcases a bold and refined interplay between a deep, lustrous black glaze and fluid, incised linear decoration — a technique the artist refers to as koku ryūsen (黒流線, "black flowing lines").
The rich black ground is achieved through a dramatic kiln-fired glaze that pools and flows across the surface, creating subtle variations in depth and sheen that reward close inspection.
Against this dark field, the incised flowing lines trace an elegant, almost calligraphic rhythm across the body of the vase — a dialogue between restraint and movement that is quintessentially Japanese in its aesthetic sensibility.
The cylindrical form is clean and assured, with a quiet confidence that allows the surface decoration to speak.
The contrast between the deep matte-to-gloss black glaze and the pale exposed clay of the incised lines creates a striking visual tension, giving the piece a presence that feels simultaneously ancient and thoroughly contemporary.
This vase transitions effortlessly between traditional Japanese interiors and modern spaces, making it a compelling decorative object for collectors who appreciate the tension between tradition and modernity in contemporary Japanese ceramics.
The piece comes in its original wooden box with cloth wrapping (tomobako, tomobuno) and a biographical pamphlet (shiori).

Artist Profile
谷口正典 Taniguchi Masanori is the second-generation head of the Taniguchi ceramic studio, based at the Kiyomizuyaki Danchi in Kyoto. A Nitten (Japan Fine Arts Exhibition) associate member and councilor of the Japan New Craft Artists Association (日本新工芸家連盟), he has also served as a lecturer at Kinran Women's Junior College and currently teaches at Kyoto SKY Center. He pursues themes of sky, cloud, and wind in his ceramic work, which he exhibits regularly at Nitten and other major exhibitions.
He trained under his father, the late Taniguchi Ryozo (1926–1996), a towering figure in post-war Japanese ceramics. Taniguchi Ryozo received the Prime Minister's Award at the 27th Nitten Exhibition, the Kyoto Prefectural Cultural Achievement Award, and was internationally recognized for his signature "hekisai" (碧彩) glazes — deep, ethereal blues and greens that brought a bold new sensibility to Kyoto ware. Taniguchi Masanori upholds this legacy of expressive glaze work while developing his own individual artistic voice.
