Katsuyuki Nishijima “Shimizuya” – Japanese Woodblock Print – Limited Edition 101/500 – Traditional Architecture Scene
Item Description
This is an exceptional Japanese woodblock print titled “Shimizuya” by renowned artist Katsuyuki Nishijima. The artwork depicts the historic Shimizuya building located in Magome-juku, one of the post towns along the Nakasendo (Kiso Kaido). The composition captures a traditional wooden façade with finely rendered latticework, complemented by three vividly colored wagasa (traditional umbrellas), creating a refined balance between calm architectural tones and striking color accents.
This work is closely associated with Nishijima’s celebrated Kiso Kaido series, a major body of work developed around 1979, during a pivotal period in his career when he reinterpreted historical Japanese landscapes through a modern graphic sensibility . The series reflects both a revival of traditional aesthetics and a response to rapid modernization in Japan at the time.
Nishijima’s technique combines traditional ukiyo-e craftsmanship with contemporary design elements, characterized by bold outlines, carefully controlled color planes, and subtle bokashi (gradation). As a sosaku hanga artist, he personally executed all stages of production—design, carving, and printing—resulting in prints that carry a strong sense of individuality and craftsmanship.
This piece is part of a limited edition of 500, numbered 101/500, and is considered an early edition impression likely dating from the late 1970s to early 1980s, when the original blocks were first produced. Early impressions are particularly valued for their clarity of line and richness of color.
Condition: There are some light brown stains visible in places, as shown in the images. Perception of these marks may vary, so please review the photos carefully. The sheet is mounted onto a thin backing paper at two points, also visible in the images.
