It was created around the mid-to-late 19th century (c. 1850–1880) by an anonymous literati painter active during this era; the artist’s detailed biography remains unrecorded. A classic bird-and-flower composition popular in the Edo–Meiji period, the work centres on the plum blossom — one of the Three Friends of Winter (歳寒三友) — symbolising purity, resilience, and perseverance. The lively bird perched amid snowy branches further evokes the vitality of approaching spring. Rendered in ink and colour on silk, the painting depicts a vigorous winter plum branch in full bloom, dotted with delicate white blossoms. A small green bird rests gracefully on the twig, full of life. The background is softly washed in light ink, with scattered white dots suggesting gentle snowfall, lending a quiet poetic atmosphere. In the lower-left corner, a simple light-brown section depicts the edge of a traditional Japanese roof, grounding the scene in a tranquil garden setting while balancing the composition elegantly.
