Historical Context:
This bronze issue originates from Amisos, one of the most prosperous Greek cities on the southern Euxine (Black Sea) coast. Struck during the reign of Mithradates VI Eupator, this coin features the quintessential Hellenistic pairing of Apollo and his sacred tripod. While Amisos produced a vast quantity of bronze coinage during this era, smaller denominations of this specific type are notably less common in the market compared to the larger Aegis or Perseus types. The tripod, a symbol of the Delphic Oracle, signifies the city’s religious devotion and its role as a center of Greek culture in the Pontic region. The clear "ΑΜΙ-ΣΟΥ" ethnic on the reverse confirms the city's authority and its economic importance as a maritime hub that connected the inland territories of the Kingdom of Pontos with the broader Mediterranean world.
