An ornate lacquer shodana 書棚 (book display cabinet) with stand, richly adorned in gilt lacquer. The cabinet is designed with a variety of sliding doors, hinged doors, and drawers, each decorated with gold-lacquered panels depicting birds, insects, and flowering plants. The background behind the staggered shelves features a detailed landscape scene with mountains, pine trees, and boats floating on water. The sides and top are likewise decorated with landscape motifs. The side panels include reticulated designs of folding fans and stylised Buddhist flames, while the edges and rims are embellished with scrolling vines and diaper patterns. Period: Japan – Meiji period (1868-1912). Dimensions: Height 106.8 cm, Width 73.7 cm, Depth 33.8 cm. In a good condition with traces of wear conform age, like some loss of lacquer along edges and and some light rubbing to the decoration consistent with age.
