British India. George VI. 1 Pice 1943(B) NGC MS66RB (χωρίς τιμή ασφαλείας)
1943 British India 1 Pice holed copper coin (High Crown Small Dot variety), graded NGC MS66 RB
Coin Story:
1943 was during the peak of World War II. British India served as a key Allied logistics base, facing severe material shortages. To conserve copper, the British replaced smaller denomination coins (like 1/12 Anna) with this holed 1 Pice (equivalent to 1/64 Rupee), made of bronze instead of brass, weighing only about 2 grams, with a diameter of around 21.3mm. The central square hole design made it easy to string on cords for carrying, a typical "wartime economy coin" suited to Asian circulation habits.
Features the portrait of King George VI as "King Emperor," with a sharply pointed high crown symbolizing imperial authority. The reverse shows a laurel wreath surrounding the square hole, inscribed "1 PICE / INDIA / एक पैसा / 1943.
This is from the Bombay Mint. The Bombay Mint also produced High Crown varieties in the same year, but with a large dot or diamond mint mark; the Pretoria version is distinguished by the small dot below the date.
In summary, this NGC MS66 RB coin is not only technically near the pinnacle of the series (with superb red color, luster, and detail), but also carries profound historical weight as a WWII artifact. For collectors in the region, it represents an outstanding choice for both personal enjoyment and investment—truly a gem worth treasuring!
