A heavy traditional Japanese chôzu’bachi 手水鉢 (water basin) carved from a single solid block of granite. Of circular form with tall sides and a coarse-textured surface that enhances its strong, natural presence. The stone displays a beautiful interplay of grey, brown and lighter tones, creating a refined mottled effect. The basin is designed to be partially embedded for stable placement within a garden setting. Chôzu’bachi, also known as a water reservoir for cleansing, is a traditional feature in Japanese gardens. Beyond its ornamental appeal, it serves a ritual purpose as a vessel for washing hands and rinsing the mouth before entering sacred spaces such as temples, shrines, or tea gardens. When used in such contexts, it is referred to as a tsukubai 蹲. These basins embody the Japanese ideals of purity and mindfulness, symbolising both physical and spiritual preparation.
