Large Art Nouveau Jardinière with Dripping Glaze – De Bruyn, Fives-Lille, France, early 20th century A striking and highly decorative Art Nouveau jardinière, distinguished by its sculptural form and expressive “dripping glaze” decoration. The piece features a softly shaped rectangular body with gently curved sides, raised on an integrated base and flanked by elegant, organic handles adorned with stylized leaves — a clear reflection of the naturalistic vocabulary of the Art Nouveau period. The glaze is particularly captivating: a rich gradient flowing from deep cobalt blue at the base into creamy ivory tones at the rim, enriched with subtle speckling and fluid vertical streaks created during firing. The interior is finished in a luminous green glaze, adding depth and contrast. Each example is unique due to the unpredictable nature of this technique. With its impressive size (approx. 23 cm high), this jardinière makes a strong decorative statement — ideal as a centerpiece for plants, floral arrangements, or as a sculptural object in both classic and modern interiors. Gustave De Bruyn (1838–1916) was a ceramicist of Belgian origin who established his career in France, where he founded the faience manufactory in Fives-Lille. Coming from a family of potters, he developed a large-scale production of both utilitarian and decorative ceramics, including vases and jardinières in the Art Nouveau style. His factory gained international recognition, notably receiving a silver medal at the Paris Universal Exhibition in 1889, and became one of the important centers of artistic faience production in northern France.
