Monumental 18th-Century Neapolitan Porcelain Group: "The Great Hunt".
Historical overview.
This rare, monumental porcelain sculptural group dates to circa 1785, during the prestigious Ferdinandian period of the Royal Factory in Naples. Standing at an impressive 100cm in height (1 metre), this work represents the pinnacle of Neapolitan soft-paste porcelain craftsmanship. It features the iconic Blue Underglaze Crowned "N" mark, signifying its origin from the Royal Factory established under King Ferdinand IV.
Artistic Composition.
The scene is a tour-de-force of Baroque-Neoclassical fusion, depicting a dramatic classical hunting expedition.
Central Figures: The composition is centered around the goddess Diana (Artemis), recognizable by her poise and classical drapery, surrounded by her attendants and hunters.
Dynamic Action: The group captures the peak of the chase, featuring highly detailed hounds in mid-stride and a central wild boar.
Craftsmanship: Executed in a brilliant "Blanc de Chine" white glaze, the piece highlights the sculptor's mastery of musculature, flowing garments, and anatomical accuracy. The sheer scale of the firing—achieving a 1-meter height without collapsing in the kiln—marks this as a significant technical achievement for 18th-century porcelain.
