Val Saint Lambert “John” Vase – Luxval, Amethyst Glass, Art Deco, 1935 A striking and unmistakably Art Deco vase from the celebrated Luxval range by Val Saint Lambert, model John, introduced in 1935 and documented in the Luxval catalogue. A superb example of Belgian pressed glass design, the piece embodies the bold geometry and architectural rhythm that define the Art Deco period. Executed in rich amethyst glass, the vase captivates with its deep, luminous color and sculptural form. Strong vertical ribs, finely stepped linear bands and the faceted octagonal foot create a dynamic composition of light, symmetry and shadow, while the softly flared rim lends elegance to its powerful silhouette. The model is a classic expression of Luxval design—decorative yet highly modern, equally suited to an Art Deco interior or a more contemporary setting. The amethyst tone enhances the dramatic character of the form and beautifully emphasizes the precision of the molded relief. The base bears the VSL Belgique factory mark, confirming authenticity. Condition is good, with no chips. There is a faint internal annealing line visible in the glass, likely a production-related feature rather than damage. It is not tactile and only visible under certain light. There is also slight interior clouding from age and use, both consistent with vintage glass of this period. A highly decorative and documented Luxval model, and a refined collector’s piece from the golden age of Belgian Art Deco glass. Val Saint Lambert, nestled in Seraing near Liège, Belgium, is a beacon of crystal craftsmanship with a legacy spanning nearly two centuries. Established in 1826 by chemist François Kemlin and engineer Auguste Lelièvre, the company transformed the remnants of the Val-Saint-Lambert Abbey into a thriving glassworks. The 19th century marked a period of significant growth for Val Saint Lambert. By the early 1900s, the company employed over 5,000 workers, producing 120,000 pieces of glass daily. Their creations, renowned for exceptional quality and intricate designs, found admirers worldwide, including in Tsarist Russia and North America. A testament to their artistry is the “Vase of the Nine Provinces,” a monumental piece over 2 meters tall and weighing 200 kilograms, crafted for the 1894 World Exhibition in Antwerp. The 20th century brought challenges, including the impacts of two World Wars and economic downturns. Despite these obstacles, Val Saint Lambert’s resilience ensured the preservation of its artisanal heritage. Today, the company seamlessly blends traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design, producing exquisite crystal pieces that cater to modern aesthetics. Val Saint Lambert stands as a symbol of Belgian craftsmanship, where each piece reflects a harmonious blend of history, artistry, and innovation. Will be well packaged, protected and insured
