Dial and Hands
The watch features a stunning silver sunburst dial that plays beautifully with the light, radiating outward from the center pinion. The dial is in remarkable condition, appearing exceptionally clean and free from the moisture damage, spotting, or heavy patina that frequently plagues vintage pieces from this era. It is adorned with applied gold-tone baton indices, each featuring a distinct black central stripe that enhances legibility. This black and gold motif is perfectly mirrored in the sharp, faceted dauphine hands, which remain crisp and well-preserved. The applied SEIKO and LM logos at twelve and six o'clock add depth and a touch of luxury, while the framed day-date aperture at three o'clock offers practicality, notably featuring both English and Kanji day wheels.
Case and Crystal
The classic C-shape tonneau case is rendered in Seiko Gold Plated (SGP) material over stainless steel, exhibiting the signature sweeping lines of 1970s Seiko design. The case displays honest signs of vintage wear, with micro-scratches and some light rubbing to the gold plating on the sharper edges of the lugs and bezel, entirely consistent with a timepiece that has been enjoyed over the decades. The upper case surfaces retain their brushed finish, contrasting nicely with the polished flanks. The dial is protected by a clear domed crystal that presents cleanly, allowing an unobstructed view of the pristine dial below. The stainless steel caseback remains highly legible, clearly displaying the factory engravings, reference numbers, and Suwa factory symbol.
Movement
Powering this timepiece is the highly regarded Seiko Caliber 5606, a 23-jewel automatic movement that formed the backbone of the Lord Matic family. Known for its relatively thin profile and reliable architecture, this caliber was a testament to Seiko's engineering prowess during the period. Performing well within expected vintage tolerances; running strong and steady. -37s/day.
Strap
The watch is fitted with a distinctive black leather strap featuring striking double-row contrast stitching in white and yellow gold tones. This unique stitching complements the gold-tone case and black accents on the dial perfectly, and the strap is secured with a matching gold-tone pin buckle.
Condition
This Lord Matic is presented in good vintage condition. The dial is the undisputed highlight, remaining exceptionally clean and beautifully preserved. The gold-plated case shows expected, honest wear with some softening of the factory lines and minor plating loss on the extremities, but it retains a highly attractive presence on the wrist.
Dimensions
The case measures a classic 36 mm in diameter, excluding the crown, providing a refined and comfortable fit suitable for a wide variety of wrist sizes.
Remarks
For collectors of vintage Japanese horology, the 5606-powered Lord Matic offers an incredible blend of history, design, and mechanical pedigree. The pristine condition of the dial on this specific example, combined with the charming Kanji day wheel, makes it a highly compelling acquisition for both seasoned enthusiasts and those new to the world of vintage Seiko.
History
Introduced in 1968, the Lord Matic line was positioned directly below the King Seiko and Grand Seiko collections, sharing much of the same design DNA and even foundational movement architecture. The 5600 series of movements was so successful that modified versions were eventually utilized in King Seiko models. The Lord Matic was designed as a premium everyday watch for the Japanese domestic market, embodying Seiko's commitment to precision, durability, and timeless style during a period when they were fiercely competing on the global stage.
