A very fine Ancient Greek silver drachm struck in the name and types of Alexander III the Great. The obverse displays the profiled head of Alexander as Herakles wearing the skin of the Nemean lion, facing right. The reverse displays the god, Zeus, enthroned, facing left, holding an eagle in his right hand and a sceptre in his left. The Greek inscription ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ is written below Zeus with the legend continuing with ΑΛΕΞΑΝ∆ΡΟΥ, written vertically to the right of the figure of Zeus. The legend, written in the genitive case, translates as BASILEOS ALEXANDROY, meaning [the coinage] ‘of King Alexander’. There is a Σ mintmark in the left field and an ΑΡ monogram below the throne.
