Antique Japanese Cast Iron Tetsubin (Iron Kettle) – Signed Ryubundo-zo 龍文堂造 – Meiji/Taisho Period – Bronze Lid
Description
This is an antique Japanese cast iron tetsubin (鉄瓶), a traditional iron kettle used for boiling water, featuring a classic rounded form (marugata) with a textured surface, short spout, and overhead iron handle.
The bronze lid is signed 龍文堂造 (Ryubundo-zo) on the underside, along with an additional inscription 保一斬, believed to be an individual craftsman's mark. Ryubundo was a celebrated Kyoto ironwork house active from the late Edo period through the early Showa era, renowned for producing fine cast iron wares of exceptional quality.
Specifications:
Height (body only): approx. 14 cm
Height (with handle): approx. 22 cm
Diameter (lid): approx. 9 cm
Material: Cast iron (body and handle), bronze (lid and finial)
Condition:
The exterior shows natural rust and patina consistent with age. The handle also shows surface rust. The interior has rust typical of long-term storage. Recommended for display or collection purposes rather than active use.
Note: The signature appears on the lid. As is common with Ryubundo pieces, the lid and body may originate from different production periods. Please refer to all photographs carefully before bidding.
