Περιγραφή από τον πωλητή
Ο λαός Μπετέ ζει στις νοτιοκεντρικές και δυτικές δασικές περιοχές της Ακτής Ελεφαντορίου, και φημίζεται για τη θρυλική του ικανότητα να χαράσσει ορισμένες από τις πιο δραματικές, υψηλής έντασης μάσκες σε ολόκληρη τη Δυτική Αφρική. within Bete society, masks of this formidable nature are historically tied to the Poro secret society or specialized warrior associations. They were brought out during critical moments of social crisis—such as major judicial councils, inter-clan disputes, or the final funeral rites of respected elders—to project a fierce, detached supernatural authority that enforced customary law, warded off malevolent sorcery, and restored social order.
The physical architecture of this mask perfectly exemplifies the aggressive, cubistic abstraction that characterizes the peak of Bete ritual artistry. Carved from a dense, dark-patinated hardwood, the face plate is dominated by an exceptionally high, bulbous forehead split by a sharp vertical ridge that serves as a powerful central axis. Rather than mimicking human features, the master carver concentrated the mask's entire psychological presence into a brilliant, cage-like framework across the mid-face. A series of six thick, highly stylized wooden horns or curving talons erupt from the cheeks and sweep inward in perfect symmetry, heavily shielding the eye region and casting deep, dramatic shadows over the narrow vision slits. This rigid geometric tension is beautifully grounded by a thick perimeter of braided natural plant fiber and a single, tightly wrapped cordage beard, balancing the sharp, imposing woodcraft with a rich, organic texture.
