A fine group of four old bundles of trade beads, composed of multicolored glass paste and paste beads, traditionally used as bride price in Papua. Each bundle is strung on its original natural fiber cord and shows clear signs of age and prolonged ceremonial use. Field collected during the 1980s in a village in the Lake Sentani area, and preserved in untouched condition. These bead bundles were not merely ornaments or currency. Within local societies around Lake Sentani, they represented wealth, social obligation, prestige, and the formal exchange of marriage alliances. They carried both material and deep symbolic value, moving between families as part of important ceremonial transactions. The varied colors, irregular handmade forms, and softened surfaces from long use give the beads a strong visual and tactile authenticity. Displayed together, the four bundles form an impressive ensemble with clear ethnographic presence and historical depth.
