Αρχαία Ρώμη Θραύσμα σαρκοφάγου με ισπανική άδεια εξαγωγής - 43 cm

This marble sculptural fragment corresponds to a Roman sarcophagus dating approximately to the 3rd century AD, a period in which funerary sculpture reached one of its greatest developments in the field of portraiture. The piece, measuring 43 cm long, 21 cm high, and 5 cm thick, features delicate high-relief work that combines architectural elements with a powerfully expressive physiognomic representation. The scene centers on a male bust inscribed beneath a molded arch, a common motif on sarcophagus frontals from the late Roman period. The semicircular arch, framed by fluted lines and curvilinear bands, harks back to classical architectural repertoire, evoking structures such as exedras or funerary niches, and lends solemnity to the portrayed figure. The face displays naturalistic features: arched eyebrows, almond-shaped eyes, and thin lips, all modeled with a clear intention of individualization, typical of the Roman imperial portrait, whose function was to perpetuate the memory of the deceased with realistic fidelity. This type of portrait, in which an individual is depicted framed within an architectural space, became popular in the sculpture workshops of Rome and other important cities of the Empire, such as Ostia and Lyon. Although only the facial features and part of the frame remain, the quality of the carving, as well as the depth of the relief, indicate that it was a work from a skilled workshop, possibly intended for a family of a certain social status. On the reverse of the fragment, regular vertical incisions can be seen, probably corresponding to a subsequent treatment or to the preparation of the block in the workshop. Despite being a fragment, it is in a good state of preservation, with excellent preservation of the main volumes and no major losses to the sculptural surface of the face. The iconography of the arch sheltering the sitter can also be interpreted symbolically: the passage into eternity, the protection of the soul, or even the evocation of celestial architecture. This fragment not only allows us to appreciate the technical mastery of Roman art, but also constitutes a valuable testimony to the funerary, aesthetic, and ideological practices of the classical world. Similar works can be found in the sarcophagus collections of the National Roman Museum or the Louvre, especially those with individual portraits beneath arches or niches. Acquired from a Spanish private collection, A.S in the 80's. -The piece includes an authenticity certificate as well as Spanish export license IMPORTANT: Due to the new laws on the export of archaeological pieces, we have decided to NO LONGER sell outside the European territory for the following countries: SWITZERLAND & UNITED STATES of AMERICA.
