Tsuchikaraningenwotsukuru 土から人間を創る(つちからにんげんをつくる) | Horio Ichiro 堀尾一郎(ほりおいちろう)
This work is a piece from the woodblock print collection "The World of Greek Mythology." Prometheus is said to have mixed mud (clay) and water to create the shape of a human being, having been ordered by the supreme god Zeus to create living creatures on earth, and the goddess Athena breathed life into the doll, giving it a soul (life). Horio has traveled to more than 50 countries around the world, studying local religions and myths, and this work was also born from that inquiring mind. Horio is also known as a user of "wood engraving." This is a technique that uses a very hard cross-section of wood (round slice surface) to engrave extremely fine lines.
