Roman Unguentarium – Roman Empire – 2nd Century BC to 3rd Century AD
A classic Roman terracotta unguentarium featuring a globular body, tall cylindrical neck, and slightly flared rim. Vessels of this type were widely used throughout the Roman world for storing and dispensing perfumes, scented oils, cosmetics, and medicinal preparations. Their elegant yet functional form made them a common presence in domestic life, religious practices, and funerary contexts.
This example displays a well-balanced profile with attractive archaeological surface deposits and natural age-related wear accumulated over centuries of burial. The vessel has undergone professional restoration, with visible restoration lines consistent with the reconstruction of an ancient ceramic object. Despite this, the overall appearance remains highly authentic and representative of Roman ceramic production. The simple form and harmonious proportions exemplify the practical refinement characteristic of Roman utilitarian pottery.
