Released in 2000, the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM is a medium-telephoto macro prime and a completely new design that replaced the original 1990 EF 100mm Macro. It focuses all the way to life-size (1:1) magnification without any attachments, and was the first 1:1 telephoto macro to use inner focusing — so the barrel length stays constant and the front element does not rotate, which makes ring-flashes and filters easy to use. A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM) delivers fast, quiet autofocus with full-time manual-focus override, and a three-group floating optical system (12 elements in 8 groups) keeps aberrations low all the way from infinity to life-size. A focus-range limiter is provided to help speed up autofocus. Beyond macro work, its 100mm focal length and f/2.8 aperture also make it an excellent short-telephoto portrait lens.

Mount and compatibility:
Canon EF mount. It works natively on all Canon EOS DSLRs (both full-frame and APS-C) and on EOS film bodies. On Canon EOS R-series mirrorless cameras it can be used with the EF-EOS R mount adapter, retaining full autofocus; it can also be adapted to other mirrorless systems using electronic EF adapters.
