【Product details】
This elegant Japanese porcelain incense container (kogo) is a superb example of Yingqing (影青/Inchinn) ware produced during the Edo period (1603–1868). Embodying the refined aesthetic of Song dynasty Chinese ceramics, it features a characteristic translucent glaze with a delicate bluish-white tone that lends the piece a quiet and sophisticated presence.
The circular form is masterfully balanced. The lid is decorated with a faint molded floral motif in low relief, accompanied by concentric incised rings that enhance the understated beauty of the design. Notably, the piece features Kintsugi (gold joinery) repair along the rim. This traditional Japanese technique of repairing chips with urushi lacquer and powdered gold reflects the spirit of Wabi-sabi, transforming historical wear into a unique aesthetic highlight.
Although appearing almost white at first glance, the glaze carries the subtle blue-green tint characteristic of Yingqing, produced by trace iron content firing under reduction. Fine crackle throughout the glaze has absorbed centuries of incense and age, creating the warm tonal variations and "patina" (known as keshiki in Japanese) so highly valued by tea practitioners.
The incense container is accompanied by its original period wooden storage box, a purple silk shifuku pouch with gold cord, and an additional protective cloth. These accessories reflect the exceptional care with which the piece has been preserved through generations.
This work represents a rare and fine example of how Edo-period Japanese potters reinterpreted the luminous elegance of historic Chinese porcelain traditions for the Japanese tea ceremony.
Relatively good antique condition. Features Kintsugi repairs to the rim. There is general age-related wear, soiling, and staining to the kogo. The wooden storage box and silk pouch show age-related color changes and character, reflecting their historical authenticity. Please refer to the photos for details.
