Introduced in 1962 as the top model of the original Olympus Pen range, the Pen-D was designed by the legendary Yoshihisa Maitani, creator of the Pen — the first half-frame camera made in Japan. As a half-frame camera it captures 72 shots from a single 36-exposure roll. The Pen-D carries a high-performance six-element F.Zuiko 32mm f/1.9 lens (roughly a 45mm full-frame equivalent) that focuses to 0.8 m and is celebrated for its sharpness and three-dimensional rendering. The Copal-X leaf shutter offers speeds from 1/8 to 1/500 sec plus B. The Pen-D has a built-in uncoupled selenium light meter that reads out exposure values (EV 7-17) on the top plate — no battery is required. You point the camera, read the value, and transfer it to the EV window between the shutter and aperture rings; many shutter/aperture combinations can then be chosen for the same exposure. Film speeds from ASA 10 to 400 are supported. "MADE IN JAPAN" is engraved on the base plate. Lens / Filter Thread This is a fixed-lens camera; there is no interchangeable mount. Functional The selenium exposure meter works well, and the shutter operates well. Focusing (by scale) and the aperture ring operate correctly.
