Tijs Dragtsma (1992) - The Joker in Brass

The Joker in Brass A sculptural work from the Art with Nails series by Tijs Dragtsma The Joker in Brass is a sculptural interpretation of one of cinema’s most psychologically complex figures. The image does not emerge through paint or print, but through force and precision. Hundreds of individually placed brass nails penetrate deep black acrylic glass, constructing a face that exists between control and chaos. The Joker is not depicted as noise or exaggeration. He is rendered as tension. A smile that is not joy. A gaze that suggests calculation rather than madness. The composition balances stillness and instability. Order formed through repetition. Disruption implied through fragmentation. From a distance the portrait reads as iconic and sharply defined. Up close, the surface transforms into a field of impact points. Each nail holds its own spatial position, casting elongated shadows that shift with changing light. The brass catches illumination with a cold brilliance, while the acrylic glass absorbs and deepens the surrounding darkness. The interaction between steel and acrylic glass creates a subtle material tension. The hardness of metal meets the smooth resistance of glass. Impact meets surface. The result is not simply an image, but a sculptural event suspended slightly above the plane. Light activates the work. As illumination changes, shadows stretch, overlap and contract. The face appears to move. To fragment. To reassemble. While part of a limited edition, each piece retains subtle variations due to the physical impact process, making every work materially individual. The Joker in Brass is not a portrait of chaos. It is a study of duality. Precision and unpredictability. Structure and subversion. Control shaped through force. About Art with Nails Art with Nails is a self-developed artistic medium in which imagery emerges through the precise placement of steel or brass nails into acrylic glass. Rather than applying pigment, Dragtsma constructs form through repetition, rhythm and controlled physical impact. Each nail functions as an independent sculptural element within a larger spatial composition. Depth is created not through illusion, but through actual material displacement. The interaction between metal, acrylic glass and light defines the final visual experience. Light is not external decoration. It is an active component of the work. Shadows become lines. Reflections become structure. Perspective alters perception. While produced in limited editions, no two works are materially identical due to the physical nature of the process. About the Artist – Tijs Dragtsma Tijs Dragtsma is a Dutch contemporary artist and founder of TD Fine Art Studio. His practice operates at the intersection of material, structure and light, with a strong focus on developing distinct artistic languages rather than following established traditions. He is widely recognised for his Art with Nails series, in which hundreds to thousands of steel or brass nails form sculptural portraits that transform with light and viewing angle. Through precision and repetition, he translates digital mapping into physical presence. Since beginning his artistic practice in 2024, his works have entered private collections across Europe, Asia and the United States, and have been presented internationally. His work is driven by experimentation, technical control and a long-term vision centred on material integrity and spatial experience. All works are conceived and produced in his studio in Enkhuizen, The Netherlands.

The Joker in Brass

A sculptural work from the Art with Nails series by Tijs Dragtsma

The Joker in Brass is a sculptural interpretation of one of cinema’s most psychologically complex figures.

About Art with Nails

Art with Nails is a self-developed artistic medium in which imagery emerges through the precise placement of steel or brass nails into acrylic glass.
