Aizu Hongo Ware: Ryumon-yaki Matcha Tea Bowl (Chawan) with Original Wooden Box (Tomobako) - Late 20th Century

This is an exquisite Matcha tea bowl (Chawan) crafted at the Ryumon Kiln, a prominent representative of Aizu Hongo ware from Fukushima Prefecture. Aizu Hongo ware boasts a distinguished history of over 400 years, dating back to 1593 when roof tiles were first produced for Tsuruga Castle.

Aizu Hongo Ware History
Established in 1593, Aizu Hongo ware is one of the oldest pottery traditions in the Tohoku region. It was formally developed in 1645 by the master potter Mizuno Genzaemon, invited from Seto, and further expanded in 1800 when porcelain techniques were introduced from Arita. It is a designated National Traditional Craft of Japan.

This piece showcases the kiln's signature "Ryumon" (flowing pattern) glaze, featuring a deep emerald green base with ethereal purple and white streaks that resemble flowing water. The bowl's elegant, wide-open form is reminiscent of "summer tea bowls" (Natsu-jawan), designed to allow the tea to cool gracefully.
Aizu Hongo is unique in Japan as a production center that creates both pottery and porcelain. This bowl is a fine example of the evolution of this craft, combining its 400-year history with the modern artistic expression of the Ryumon kiln. The unglazed foot (Kodai) reveals the sturdy clay and the authentic kiln mark.
The bowl comes with its original signed wooden box (Tomobako), ensuring its quality and provenance for collectors.
