Akoya-yama Kiln - Terada Yūzan (寺田雄山) - Chawan - Πηλός - Moon Chawan

Title: Japanese Akoya-yama Kiln Terada Yūzan Gosho-maru Moon Pattern Matcha Chawan (抹茶碗) with Tomobako Artist: Terada Yūzan (寺田雄山) Kiln: Akoya-yama Kiln (阿古屋野窯) Origin: Seto, Aichi Prefecture, Japan Dimensions: H 7.8 × DIA 12.8 cm (3.1 × 5.0 in) Weight: 271 g Box Dimensions: H 11.6 × W 15.5 × D 15.5 cm (4.6 × 6.1 × 6.1 in) Material: Clay, high-fired glaze Period: Heisei Period, c. 1990-2000 This is a traditional Japanese matcha chawan (抹茶碗) for tea ceremony, the core vessel for whisking and drinking matcha (抹茶) in Japanese chanoyu (茶の湯). Akoya-yama Kiln (阿古屋野窯): A representative pottery kiln in Seto, Aichi Prefecture, inheriting traditional Seto-yaki (瀬戸焼) techniques. Celebrated for its rustic clay body and rich glaze variations, the Gosho-maru (御所丸) tea bowl is one of its classic forms – an archaistic tea bowl style with deep glazes and natural kiln effects, embodying the wabi-sabi (侘寂) spirit of tea ceremony aesthetics, highly esteemed by generations of tea masters. This tea bowl is hand-formed using traditional pottery techniques. The body is covered in a kohiki (粉引) glaze base with natural crackle, and black glaze naturally cascades down the sides, creating a striking black-and-white contrast. The bowl features a moon pattern, corresponding to the "Goyomi - Tsuki (御題 月)" inscription inside the box lid, evoking a serene, poetic atmosphere. The glaze is deep and warm with natural crackle texture, creating layered effects like ink landscape painting, with a lustrous surface that fully expresses the lively charm of Japanese natural aesthetics. The foot is a hexagonal high base, with a precise and elegant form. The base bears the kiln seal. The original paulownia tomobako lid is inscribed in ink with "Gosho-maru Chawan (御所丸 茶碗) - Yūzan-saku (雄山作)" with a vermilion kiln seal. The marks correspond to the bowl's base, with clear, reliable provenance. This piece comes complete with original paulownia tomobako (共箱) storage box, yellow wrapping cloth, and bamboo chasen (茶筅) whisk – the traditional utensil for whisking matcha. Offering both protection and tea ceremony ritual significance. Also includes the artist's original pottery curriculum vitae (tōreki 陶暦). Complete set, all accessories present. Natural oxidation and ageing of the clay body consistent with age. No chips, no hairlines, no restoration to the glaze. No chips or damage to the foot. Overall good condition.
