Item Description
田中正秋 Tanaka Masaaki(1947-)
This is a vibrant and masterfully executed silkscreen print by renowned Japanese printmaker Tanaka Masaaki, titled "Koza Mifune Matsuri" (古座御船祭り — Koza Sacred Boat Festival). This work was specially commissioned by Pfizer Pharmaceuticals Japan and produced as a limited edition of 850, this being number 568.
The composition depicts the ancient and elegant Koza Mifune Matsuri, a sacred festival held annually on July 24–25 at Kawachi Shrine along the Koza River in Wakayama Prefecture, southern Japan. Three elaborately decorated sacred boats glide across the river, circling twice around the island known as Kotsumasama. The hypnotic, undulating water surface — rendered in interlocking layers of periwinkle blue and mint green — fills the entire picture plane with rhythmic energy, a hallmark of Tanaka's distinctive style. Against this mesmerizing backdrop, a ceremonial boat adorned with ritual objects, a bare winter tree hung with colorful decorations, and red-and-white offerings commands the composition, accompanied by a figure in white robes and a beautifully decorated bow of another vessel bearing a golden chrysanthemum motif.
The work captures the graceful, ceremonial atmosphere of one of Japan's most elegant river festivals — a blend of solemnity and splendor that Tanaka Masaaki has made his life's artistic mission to document. Signed in pencil by the artist and titled in the lower margin, this print comes framed in a warm natural wood frame with cream mat.

Artist Profile
田中正秋 Tanaka Masaaki(1947-)
Tanaka Masaaki was born in 1947 in Setagaya, Tokyo, into an artistic family. He graduated in 1971 from the oil painting department of Musashino Art College, one of Japan's most prestigious art institutions, and subsequently served as an assistant instructor there. He expanded his technical repertoire to encompass woodblock printing, lithography, steel engraving, and silkscreen, the medium that would become his signature.
From 1971 onward, Tanaka established himself through the annual CWAJ Print Show and gained international recognition with exhibitions across Japan, the United States, France, Germany, and beyond. He is perhaps best known as the long-running cover artist for the major Japanese weekly magazine Shūkan Shinchō, a role that brought his imagery into millions of homes. His prints are held in collections including the Honolulu Museum of Art and the Albrecht Kemper Museum of Art.
Tanaka's oeuvre centers on the festivals of Japan — he has documented over a thousand such celebrations in print, each rendered with his inimitable patterned-water technique that transforms rivers and seas into jewel-like, rhythmically woven surfaces. A member of the Ichiyō-kai artists' association and an active participant in the CWAJ, he is widely regarded as one of the foremost Japanese printmakers of his generation.
