Award-Winning Artists Set of 2 Daisy Motif Creative Kokeshi Dolls Item Description: This is a set of two Japanese creative kokeshi dolls with graceful floral motifs. The larger doll is titled 童 (Warabe), meaning “Child,” by the first-generation Okamoto Usaburo. It has a deep dark blue-brown body, a calm recessed face, and carved daisy-like floral motifs on the body. The bottom has the artist label. According to the previous owner’s note, this doll was purchased in Showa 53, 1978. The smaller doll is titled 雛菊 (Hinagiku), meaning “Daisy,” by Aoki Ryoka. It has a gentle rounded form, a pink ribbon on the head, closed eyes, and painted daisy flowers on the body. The bottom has the artist’s seal, and the doll is noted as a souvenir from Naruko Onsen. Both pieces show age-related wear, small scratches, stains, fading, and patina. Please check the photos carefully for the condition. Artist: Okamoto Usaburo, first generation, was the founder of Usaburo Kokeshi and an important creative kokeshi artist from Gunma Prefecture. He is known for sculptural expression, carved decoration, and the use of woods such as keyaki and chestnut. He received many awards, including prizes from the All Japan Kokeshi Competition and other major exhibitions. Aoki Ryoka was a creative kokeshi artist from Shibukawa, Gunma Prefecture. She studied Japanese-style painting and was known for elegant, warm, and gentle creative kokeshi. She received numerous awards, including the Prime Minister’s Award at the All Gunma Modern Kokeshi Competition, the Minister of International Trade and Industry Award, the Yellow Ribbon Medal, and recognition as a Contemporary Master Craftsman.
