Katsuyuki Kato – “Beauty of Mino Iga” Chawan with Original Signed Wooden Box and Leaflet

Description

This tea bowl, titled “Beauty of Mino Iga”, was created by Japanese ceramic artist Katsuyuki Kato of Toki City, Gifu Prefecture.

It is an expressive example of Mino Iga ware, featuring a powerful form and a rich surface reminiscent of natural ash glaze effects.

The rim has been intentionally formed into a soft oval rather than a perfect circle, creating a comfortable feel in the hand while giving the bowl a distinctive and dynamic appearance.

The artist appears to have built up the clay surface to create intentional relief before applying an Oribe-style green glaze, producing a landscape reminiscent of the natural Bidoro glassy effects associated with traditional Iga ware. This is not a shortcut in production, but rather a decorative technique often employed by Mino ceramic artists to express the character of Iga-style pottery.

The front displays striking green glaze with attractive scorched effects, while the interior reveals deep and varied glaze tones. The bowl offers different scenic expressions from every angle.

The carved foot and the stepped rim are intentional artistic features that enhance the rustic beauty and vitality characteristic of Mino Iga ceramics.

Complete with its original signed wooden storage box (tomobako) and the original leaflet.
