Αρχαία Ρωμαϊκή Οδηγός χαλινάριων από σετ κουαδρίγα — άμαξα με τέσσερα άλογα — εξαγωγή με άδεια Ισπανίας - 15.5 cm

This Roman bronze reins guide from a quadriga, four horses chariot is an exceptional collection of bronze accessories belonging to the Roman Empire, dating back to the 3rd century AD. These pieces, with individual dimensions ranging from 8 to 15.5 cm for unit , and a total of approximately 40 cm wide by 30 cm deep for the all set, were used as decorative and functional elements in the harnesses of chariots, war or racing chariots, which were symbols of power, prestige and spectacle in ancient Rome. The set consists of several finely worked bronze elements, standing out for their artistic elaboration and functionality. Each piece presents ornamental details that reflect the visual richness characteristic of Roman art. The equestrian motifs stand out, with meticulously modelled horse heads emerging from the sides of the main pieces, evoking the strength and majesty of the animals that pulled the chariots. These horses are depicted with great realism, with finely carved manes and carefully outlined expressions, evidencing the technical skill of Roman craftsmen. In addition, the surfaces are decorated with engraved geometric and vegetal patterns, such as stylised leaves and braids, typical elements of the Roman decorative repertoire. In some pieces, additional details can be seen, such as hanging garlands that probably symbolise victory or honour, referring to the ceremonial or competitive context in which these chariots were used. These decorations not only had an aesthetic function, but also a symbolic one, reinforcing the high status of the owners or drivers of the chariot. These railings not only served as decorative elements, but also as functional pieces that connected the reins of the horses to the frame of the chariot, allowing control and handling of the vehicle. Their robust design, combined with the elaborate decoration, illustrates the Roman focus on combining utility and beauty, a recurring principle in their art and architecture. In terms of conservation, the set is in good condition, considering its age. The green patina covering the surface of the pieces is an indicator of the natural ageing of the bronze, a result of exposure to the elements over centuries. This patina not only provides aesthetic value, but also acts as a protective layer that has helped preserve the ornamental details. Although some pieces show signs of wear or small dents, these imperfections are consistent with their historical use and reinforce their authenticity. Historically, these chariots would have been part of a chariot used in chariot races in the Roman Circus or in triumphal parades. Chariot races were one of the most popular spectacles in the Roman Empire, drawing crowds to the circuses to witness the competitions between charioteers, who drove the chariots at breakneck speeds. In ceremonial contexts, these chariots were also associated with triumphal parades, where victorious generals used them to display their military glory. The “Roman Chariot Footbridge Set” is therefore a material testimony to the technical and artistic sophistication of the Roman Empire. It reflects not only the level of detail and symbolism employed in accessories for everyday and ceremonial use, but also the social and cultural importance of the chariots in Roman public life. This set encapsulates the competitive, military and aesthetic spirit of ancient Rome, offering a tangible insight into its grandeur and refinement. Acquired from a Belgium private collection, A.K in the 80's. -The piece includes an authenticity certificate as well of Spanish export license.
