Αρχαία Αιγυπτιακή Μεγάλο φυλαχτό μπαμπούνας του Θεού Θώθ - 54 mm

Ancient Egyptian Provenance: Collection passed on to me by mother (P.M.Shaw) in 2009 Given to her by J.G.Judd who acquired the piece part of a strand of varied depictions and amulets from Cairo dealer 03-02-1969. - with copy of original invoice available. International Signed and Tracked. Baboon Amulet of God Thoth. 1. Material and Manufacturing Material: The amulet is made of Egyptian faience (a quartz-based ceramic material known for its lustrous, glass-like glaze). Color: It features a vibrant turquoise/blue-green glaze. In ancient Egypt, these colors were highly symbolic, representing fertility, rebirth, vegetation, and the life-giving waters of the Nile. Technique: The piece was likely formed in a two-part mold, with finer details like the grooves of the mane and facial features touched up by hand before firing. 2. Iconography and Representation The Subject: The figure represents a Hamadryas baboon (Papio hamadryas), a species native to the regions south of Egypt (such as Punt) and imported for sacred purposes. It is clearly identifiable by its elongated muzzle and the heavy, stylized cape of fur (mane) covering its shoulders and chest. Posture: The baboon is depicted standing upright on a small rectangular base, supported by a thick back pillar running down its spine to ensure structural stability. Its hands are placed resting directly on its thighs or knees. 4. Dating and Style Amulets of this size, material, and stylistic configuration (standing with a prominent back pillar and integrated suspension loop) were incredibly popular during the Third Intermediate Period to the Late Period (c. 1069–332 BCE). During this era, the production of small, finely detailed faience amulets reached its peak as they became essential components of both daily life and funerary religion. Microscopic images have been added to display pigmentation and integrity of the core faience.
