Kikuchi Yosai (November 28, 1788 - June 16, 1878) was a Japanese-style painter from the end of the Edo period to the beginning of the Meiji period. He had loved to draw since he was a child, but unfortunately his father would not allow him to learn painting. But after seeing the portraits of his parents which he drew at the age of sixteen, his father recognized his talent for the first time and gave him permission to study. He studied under Takada Enjo since 1805. Kikuchi is most famous for his monochrome portraits of historical figures. His illustrated history of Japanese heroes, Zenken Kojitsu, is a remarkable specimen of his skill as a draughtsman in monochrome ink. In order to produce this work, and his many other portraits of historical figures, he performed extensive historical, and even archaeological, research. His notable students were Watanabe Seitei and Matsumoto Fuko. He died in 1878 when he was 90 years old.
Kikuchi Yosai's works are in the collections of the The British museum, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, The Metropoliten Museum, Smithsonian's National Museum of Asian Art, among others.
