Shading is built entirely from gradations of black and soft gray tones, resembling diluted black ink, while a single touch of vermilion at the lips draws the eye across the otherwise quiet composition. This is a single hand-pulled impression on handmade Japanese paper (washi), where the natural fibre texture remains visible. As ink density varies slightly with each pull, no two impressions from the same block look exactly alike.
