Περιγραφή από τον πωλητή

Original Book Leaf, etching and aquatint by Francisco de Goya (1746–1828), "Se repulen" / "They spruce themselves up", from the series Los Caprichos, first published in 1799.

This impression is a restrike, printed from Goya's original copper plates at the early 20th century. While it is not possible to assign this print to a specific edition with certainty — several restrikes followed one another in very close succession during this period — the available evidence (paper, printing quality, the absence of watermarks, radiology) places it among the earliest of these posthumous-plate printings. The strength and clarity of the impression is such that, on first inspection, it could be mistaken for a first edition (Madrid, 1799); closer examination confirms it as an early restrike rather than a first state/edition print.

Paper & sheet size: The sheet has, at some point, been separated from its original bound volume, and as a result overall sheet dimensions vary slightly from plate to plate within this group. The printed image itself, however, corresponds to the original plate size, give or take a few millimeters. No watermark is present on the paper.
Sheet size (this plate): [31,9 cm height x 22,7 cm width]
Plate/image size (this plate): [21,5 cm height x 15,1 cm width]

Condition: Slight yellow toning throughout the paper as to be expected. Paper slightly more white in reality than what's shown on images, purely for the fact of color balance when executing the photos. Small tears on the left side of the page, unfortunately occured during the unbinding process way back when.

Dating: Dating to the 20th century is based on comparison with publicly documented examples and examples held in private collections, together with physical examination (thread count, radiology, bio-dating, visual analysis) by ANNO's in-house specialists and an additional opinion provided by Catawiki's own experts.

Provenance: Accompanied by a certificate of provenance, in unique paper so that each certificate is identifiable and distinct from each other, prepared by ANNO, tracing the print to the collection of Alexandre de Cortegraça Bernardo-Brissos, in whose family's collection it has remained since. It will only include the following information and details: Year of birth, professional activity, when it's suspected he might've acquired this item / collection, for how long it's been held by the family, some other rather small details and an ex-libris (not printed, inked on the actual paper); if you'd prefer it signed as well, please send us a message straight away after purchase so we can include it.

Artist: Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes (1746–1828), Spanish painter and printmaker, widely regarded as the most important Spanish artist of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, and a key precursor of modern art.
Series: Los Caprichos is a set of 80 etchings with aquatint, satirizing Spanish society, superstition, and the abuses of clergy and aristocracy. First published by Goya himself in 1799.

Shipping: Will be shipped promptly, in a big white envelope that has a cardboard backing. Will be inside a plastic "bag" to avoid any unfortunate liquid mistakes. Will be shipped with tracking, from Germany to ensure a more speedy proccess than if it was in Portugal.
