A piece of the past, made to be worn
Viking Bronze Runic Ring – Odin's Wisdom and Protective Rune Symbols, ca. 9th–11th Century AD
This Viking Age bronze ring features an oval bezel engraved with a carefully arranged series of runiform symbols. Such compositions are often associated with the symbolic and magical traditions of the Norse world, where runes were believed to carry meanings extending beyond ordinary writing.
According to Norse legend, Odin obtained the knowledge of the runes through his sacrifice upon Yggdrasil, the World Tree. In this context, the engraved signs may have been intended to invoke protection, wisdom, favorable destiny, or divine guidance. Similar symbolic inscriptions are occasionally connected with the wider tradition of bind-runes and protective formulas found throughout Viking material culture.
The ring preserves an attractive archaeological patina and represents a compelling example of Viking symbolic art and personal adornment.
